Activity 1: Create a Healthy Olympic Village

Learning Outcomes
Students will recognize and theoretically manage the mental, physical, and social health needs of athletes participating in the 2002 Olympic Winter Games.

Instruction
Teacher will present the following situation to the class. As the Salt Lake Organizing Committee prepares for the upcoming 2002 Olympic Winter Games, they realize the need for a "healthy" Olympic Village. The committee believes that the village will play a large role in the success of the athletes that stay there. Organizers wish to develop a plan allowing athletes to eat well, manage stress (including homesickness and loneliness), reduce risk of illness or injury, develop friendships with other athletes, gain respect for fellow competitors, honor diversity, and improve sportsmanship. In order to achieve this, students form special committees to address these concerns. Students may wish to form the following committees.
Nutrition
Stress Management
Health Issues
Developing positive relationships
Promoting Spirit of the Olympic Winter Games
Each committee will brainstorm ways to improve the health environment of the Olympic Village in the area of their concern. Students may wish to write and diagram their plan. Allow 30-45 minutes for committee to complete their tasks. Once complete, have committees present their plan to the class for approval.

Tasks
Nutrition
Develop one-day meal plan for athlete requiring 2,000 calories a day. Include fluid concerns and consideration for high altitude. Develop a one-day meal plan for athletes requiring 5,000 calories a day. This plan would need to include fluid and calorie intake while competing. (For example, a cross country skier in a 20K event)
Stress Management
Develop a list of all possible stressors an Olympic athlete may encounter. (Include eustress and distress) Develop a strategy to manage the 10 stressors most likely to impair athletic performance or "peak performance."
Health Issues
Develop a list of health concerns for Olympic athletes staying in the village. This may include disease transmission, drug/alcohol abuse, high altitude etc. Develop "Public Awareness" posters to address the top 5 health concerns.
Develop Positive Relationships
Design a "Recreation Room" that would allow athletes opportunities for developing friendships, gaining respect for others, honoring diversity, and increasing sportsmanship.
Promoting Spirit of the Olympic Winter Games
Design 5 T-shirts to be given to athletes that promote Olympic Spirit.

Assessment
Students will present a written and oral plan to improve the environment of the Olympic Village.
