Activity 1: Opening Ceremonies for Mother Goose Olympics
Preparation
Thirty to Forty minutes to prepare a set of different colored name tags for
each group of students and one Olympic Torch. This can be simply made by
taking brown butcher paper and shaping it into a long cone. Tape it in place.
Bunch up some red, yellow, and orange paper into a flame shape, and stick it
into the opening of the cone.
Tools and Resources
Parent volunteers would be very helpful, and it would be fun for the parents
to watch the events. Students should be familiar with the nursery rhymes before
hand. Teach the Mother Goose Song that goes to the tune of the Mickey Mouse
March: Come along and sing our song and join our company. . .

Instruction
Have students begin the celebration by singing the Mother Goose song. Following the
song, have them carry the torch in a parade fashion around the room, or even better,
down the halls. They could pass the torch from one class to another or from one
student to another. After passing of the torch, the students should group together
to go over the expectations of the games, working and cooperating as team members,
encouraging each other, and being good sports. Discuss such things as staying with
your group following the rules of the games, doing your personal best and respecting
others.
Assessment
Students will:
|
Repeat back the expectations for the lesson

Participate in the activity

Activity 2: Mother Goose Olympic events
Preparation
One hour is needed to make medals for each event. These could be out of card stock,
or canning lids and then spray painted or covered with paper. The "medal" might also
have a graphic of the nursery rhyme character. For example: a simple puzzle cut from
a picture of Humpty Dumpty, a large cutout of a crescent moon, etc.
Tools and Resources
Parent volunteers would be helpful to prepare props and for supervision of each event.
A large area such as the gym or outside if weather permits would be best for the events.
Several pair of old socks-depends on group sizes, aluminum pie plates, large black trash
bags, Humpty Dumpty puzzle, candles and candle sticks, a large cardboard cutout of a crescent moon.
Instruction
Set up props around the gym for needed events. Divide class or classes into small
groups of four or five. Rotate to each event.
|
Diddle, Diddle Dumpling Sock (relay) race. Put socks on over shoes,
run course, come back, take them off, and give to the next one in line.
|
|
Rub-a-dub-dub Three Men in a Tub (relay) race. Three students hold
hands and run the course, turn around, come back and the next three run.
|
|
Simple Simon Pie Plate (relay) race. Large black trash bag for each team.
On "go," the first child in each line steps into the trash bag and races the
course, comes back and tags the next member.
|
|
Humpty Dumpty Puzzle Race. Enlarge Humpty Dumpty picture, cut into puzzle.
Put all pieces in a bag, kid takes the bag, runs to the line, dumps puzzle,
and puts it together, puts it back in bag, runs bag to the next person in line.
|
|
Jack Be Nimble Hurdles. Bring in some old candles and holders and set them up
in a line and have the kids run and hurdle them.
|
|
Hey Diddle, Diddle Jump. Make a large cardboard cutout of a crescent moon.
Stand the moon in an area of the gym and challenge the kids to jump over it
. . .like the cow.
|
Assessment
Students will demonstrate the ability to participate in a cooperative activity.
Extensions
Award each child a medal for each activity completed. Give students a paper with the
Olympic Rings on it. Have them draw themselves inside the circle as an Olympic medalist.
