Handout -
Modern Olympism
Art supplies to make a game including paper, scissors, glue, etc.
Olympism (check the school library for this curriculum packet)
Ask the class to read and discuss the Modern Olympism handout.
Write the word SPORTSMANSHIP on the board. As a class brainstorm ideas or phrases
that relate to the word. Discuss why it's important to have good sportsmanship, to
play fair, and follow the rules. Ask the kids to express their own feelings about
good sportsmanship, fairness, and playing by the rules.
Break the students into small groups.
Ask, students to create a new Olympic event. Students must include written rules and
judging criteria for the event.
Have the groups share their events in two different ways. First have them do the
events without the rules they've written. Then have them do it with the rules.
Discuss the previous activities with the class.
Possible discussion questions include:
|
Was it easier to play with rules or without? Why or why not?
|
|
Were the games more fun with or without rules? Why or why not? Does playing
by rules and having good sportsmanship build character? How?
|
|
What are some other situations where following the rules, being honest or
being fair is important? (For example, if you got too much change back at
the store...what would you do?)
|
The students will produce an event with written rules that relates to the 2002 Olympic Winter Games.
Ask the students to express their feelings about sportsmanship, fairness, and rules. Have the
students complete in writing, one or more of these statements.
The students may like to make up their own opening statements regarding the games,
rules and sportsmanship required to play in the games.
