Social StudiesSixth Grade

Learning from our Heritage

Description
In a quickly changing world students become conditioned to value ideas that are "new and improved." The fact is that most ideas are based on the beliefs and knowledge of the past. The Ancient Greeks originated the first Olympic games. They were reinstated in 1896. More recently, men recognized the popularity of winter sports and adapted the Olympic celebration to incorporate games of snow and ice. Creativity often adapts rather than invents new ideas.

Activity 1: The Past Influences the Future

Preparation
10 minutes
Class time 40 minutes

Tools and Resources
Video - Olympism (Check school or district libraries for this resource.)
Internet Resources may include:
Ancient Olympic Games
