Governor Congratulates MLS Cup Champions Real Salt Lake

SALT LAKE CITY – Governor Gary R. Herbert is among the thousands of Utahns celebrating Real Salt Lake, the 2009 MLS Cup Champions, today.

“What an amazing day for Real Salt Lake, soccer fans, and the entire State of Utah,” the Governor said. “Once again, Salt Lake and Utah have been showcased on an international scale. In 2002, it was the Winter Olympics. And now it is Real Salt Lake – the 2009 MLS Cup Champions.”

The Governor and First Lady will host the team at a special luncheon at the Governor’s Mansion on Tuesday, followed by a 3 p.m. public celebration on the steps of the Utah State Capitol. The team will then participate in a motorcade to Sandy for the 2009 MLS Cup Celebration Rally at Rio Tinto Stadium.

“Soccer and Real Salt Lake have played an important role in helping boost the economy of Utah, not to mention enhancing our image at home and abroad,” Governor Herbert said. “Utah sporting events, including the success of our other professional and collegiate teams, all play a role in generating significant economic impact and highlighting Utah as the ‘State of Sport.'”

The Major League Soccer team’s Sunday night victory over the L.A. Galaxy gives Utah its first major professional sports championship since 1971, when the Utah Stars won the American Basketball Association championship.
