Governor Herbert to Launch the Great Salt Lake Advisory Council

Governor Gary R. Herbert, Members of the Great Salt Lake Advisory Council

Governor Herbert will host the first meeting of the recently established Great Salt Lake Council at Antelope Island State Park. The goal of the Council is to provide advice to Governor Herbert, the Utah Department of Natural Resources and the Utah Department of Environmental Quality concerning the sustainable use, protection and development of the Great Salt Lake.

The Great Salt Lake Commission recommended the formation of the Advisory Council, which was authorized in the 2010 legislative session through House Bill 343, sponsored by Rep. Ben Ferry. Former Governor Jon Huntsman Jr. formed the Commission to recommend a mechanism to provide insight about and advice on protecting and enhancing the Great Salt Lake and its surrounding ecosystem. Board members of the new Advisory Council include county commissioners, municipal officials, representatives of conservation groups and representatives of industries that use the Great Salt Lake.
