Governor Orders Flags To Be Lowered in Honor of Lance Corporal Norberto Mendez Hernandez

SALT LAKE CITY – Governor Gary R. Herbert has ordered the Flag of the United States of America and the Flag of the State of Utah to be lowered in honor of Lance Corporal Norberto Mendez Hernandez.  The flags will be flown at half-staff at all state facilities from sunrise to sunset on July 21, 2011.

Lance Corporal Hernandez, of Logan, died on July 10, 2011, while conducting combat operations in Helmand Province, Afghanistan, in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.  
He was assigned to 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, Camp Pendleton, California.
Governor Herbert issued the following statement upon receiving word of his death:
“Our hearts grieve with the tragic loss of another Utah serviceman, Lance Corporal Norberto Mendez Hernandez, for whose selfless service we are ever thankful.  Joining the grateful people of the State of Utah, Jeanette and I offer the Hernandez family our deepest condolences for ultimate sacrifice of this noble Marine, son, husband and father.”
