Nominees announced for two Third District Court vacancies

SALT LAKE CITY – The Third District Judicial Nominating Commission has selected nominees for two vacancies on the district court.  These vacancies result from the retirements of Judge Robin Reese, effective Dec. 31, 2014 and Judge Denise Posse Lindberg, effective Jan. 1, 2015.  The Third Judicial District includes Salt Lake, Summit and Tooele counties.

The nominees to replace Judge Reese are: Patricia Cassell, assistant division administrator, Salt Lake County Attorney’s Office; Paul Farr, judge, Sandy City Justice Court; Michael Ford, attorney, Strong & Hanni; James Gardner, partner, Snell & Wilmer, LLP; William Kendall, anti-gang coordinator, deputy violent crimes section chief, U.S. Attorney’s Office.

The nominees to replace Judge Lindberg are: Heather Brereton, misdemeanor division chief, trial attorney, Salt Lake Legal Defender Association; Paul Farr, judge, Sandy City Justice Court; James Gardner, partner, Snell & Wilmer, LLP; William Kendall, anti-gang coordinator, deputy violent crimes section chief, U.S. Attorney’s Office; Janise Macanas, assistant attorney general, Special Prosecutions Director, Utah Attorney General’s Office.

Written comments can be submitted to the Third District Judicial Nominating Commission Chair Deirdre Straight at judicialvacancies@utah.gov or Commission on Criminal and Juvenile Justice, P.O. Box 142330, Salt Lake City, UT 84114-2330.  The deadline for written comments is noon Nov. 10, 2014. The Nominating Commission may request further information or conduct an investigation of the nominees after reviewing public comments.  After the public comment period, the names will be sent to Gov. Gary R. Herbert, who will have 30 days to make an appointment. Gov. Herbert’s appointee is subject to confirmation by the Utah Senate.
