Prison relocation public events announced

Utahns will be able to visit counties of the prospective sites for the new state prison to view informational displays and ask questions of a Prison Relocation Commission panel in just a few short weeks.

In a letter sent Friday, Sen. Jerry Stevenson and Rep. Brad Wilson announced three dates for on-site informational public events designed to ensure transparency and public involvement — something Gov. Gary Herbert has insisted on since Day 1 — as Utah selects a site for the new state prison.

The current prison facility is dilapidated, inefficient and needs to be rebuilt in the right location with input from the public.

Each public event will include an “open house” close to the proposed site where attendees can browse informational displays, talk to state officials and participate in a Q&A session.

A public hearing will be set following these events. Open house events are scheduled as follows:
