Honoring Officer Doug Barney and Deputy Leon May
May 5, 2016
Hundreds of law enforcement officers and their family members gathered on the Capitol grounds Thursday morning as the names of Unified Police Department Officer Doug Barney and Sheriff Deputy Leon Albert May were added to the wall of the Utah Law Enforcement Memorial.
Both Officer Barney and Deputy May were killed in the line of duty.
“Today, I join with grateful Utahns everywhere in saluting these fallen heroes for their extraordinary sacrifice,” Gov. Herbert said. “It is my hope that we will leave today with a profound sense of gratitude for these officers—that the names engraved on this memorial will be indelibly engraved in our minds and in our hearts as well.”
Officer Barney gave the ultimate sacrifice when he was fatally shot by a criminal fleeing the scene of an accident on January 17, 2016. Deputy May drowned in the Bear River on April 11, 1953 while searching for the body of a missing man, but his death was discovered only recently during ongoing historical research. Both had family members in attendance who helped place their names on the memorial wall.
