Utah receives top honors for government digitalization

Utah tied as the No. 1 state in the nation for government digitalization, according to a newly released study from the U.S. News and World Report. The ranking explores how governments use technology to serve their populations and measured how states use digital communication to streamline government operations and increase capacity.
“Our state-led efforts to modernize and digitize government services are paying significant dividends for the people who call Utah home,” Governor Gary R. Herbert said. “Chief Information Officer Mike Hussey and his team are committed to providing Utahns with more efficient and effective services and I congratulate them on this well-deserved ranking.”
The Utah Department of Technology Services (DTS) has worked closely with other state agencies to deliver quality eGovernment services and information to Utah residents. The result is greater operational efficiencies and a better experience for Utahns using public services. The state not only met but surpassed the governor’s goal of increasing efficiency in government by 25 percent by January 2017, reaching an overall measurable improvement rate of 26.7 percent and saving taxpayers $187 million.
This latest ranking comes on the heels of other national recognitions for digital innovation in state government. In 2016, the Center for Digital Government honored the Beehive State with an A grade in its Digital States Survey evaluation. It has also awarded the state website, Utah.gov, a coveted position in the top two Best of the Web Awards for six years running. Utah.gov provides access to almost 1,300 online government services and has received more than 100 national and international awards.
“Technology has changed the way people interact with one another and the world,” said Hussey. “Government cannot afford to fall behind the curve. We have to adapt quickly to deliver the government services our citizens and businesses need. We have the opportunity to do things more efficiently, saving the taxpayer money and time. That is the goal to which we are committed.”
