Governor Herbert statement on the death of Catholic Bishop George H. Niederauer

SALT LAKE CITY (May 2, 2017) – Governor Gary R. Herbert issued a statement following the death of Catholic Bishop George H. Niederauer:

“The passing of his excellency Bishop George H. Niederauer will be felt by many in the state of Utah. As the eighth bishop of the Salt Lake City Diocese, Bishop Niederauer made an indelible mark on our community through his spiritual leadership. His ten years of service here were marked with great collaboration in the faith community. His loss is felt deeply.”

Bishop Niederauer served the Salt Lake City Diocese from 1995-2005 before being named the eighth Metropolitan Archbishop of San Francisco by Pope Benedict XVI. The Holy See accepted Niederauer’s letter of resignation in 2012 after health complications.
