Utah firefighters continue to serve in Thomas Fire
December 15, 2017
SALT LAKE CITY (Dec. 15, 2017) – More than 100 firefighters from 20 Utah fire agencies are on a two-week deployment to the Thomas Fire (252,000 acres and 35 percent contained) in Ventura County, Calif. Our firefighters are deployed under a system of state-to-state mutual aid called the Emergency Management Assistance Compact. They are working long hours and not only serving, but also gaining valuable experience.
“I am especially proud of our Utah firefighters who are sacrificing time away from their families during this holiday season to lend strength in the fight against the devastating fires in California,” said Gov. Herbert.
The following departments, in alphabetical order, have volunteered firefighters to the Thomas Fire:
- Castle Dale
- Cedar City
- Hurricane Valley
- Salt Lake City
- South Jordan
- Uintah City
- Unified Fire Authority
- Utah Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands
- Wasatch County
- Washington City
- West Jordan
- West Valley City
Utahns from each of these jurisdictions should be proud of their service.
“Jeanette and I also join the state of California in mourning the passing of Fire Engineer Cory Iverson from Cal Fire San Diego, who gave the ultimate sacrifice on Thursday, Dec. 14, while fighting the Thomas Fire,” Gov. Herbert said.
