Alex Peterson
Alex Peterson serves as Senior Advisor to Gov. Spencer J. Cox and Director of the Utah Office of Families. In this role, she leads the governor’s executive strategy and cross-agency coordination efforts to sustain Utah's national leadership in family wellbeing and opportunity. Her work focuses on advancing practical, evidence-based policies and partnerships that remove barriers for parents, fostering an environment that empowers Utahns to successfully form families, nurture healthy and resilient children, and build a strong foundation for their future.
Peterson most recently spent three years at The Policy Project, a Utah-based nonprofit advancing practical policy solutions. Her work centered on advising policy strategy and translating broad, family-centered goals into passed statewide legislation, with a particular focus on child protection. Her commitment to protecting children and strengthening families is informed by her professional experience, as well as her perspective as a survivor, advocate, and mother of five young children.
Peterson began her career working in Congress before serving as national director of donor relations and personal aide to Ann Romney during Mitt Romney’s 2012 presidential campaign. After returning to Utah, she led corporate relations at doTERRA International and contributed research and analysis to the Utah Women & Leadership Project.
Peterson earned a master’s degree in Education Policy and Management from the Harvard Graduate School of Education and graduated with honors from California State University, Long Beach. She and her husband, Ben, live in Utah County with their family.
