Brian Redd was appointed by Governor Spencer J. Cox to serve in his cabinet as the Executive Director of the Utah Department of Corrections in May 2023. Director Redd oversees the department’s operations including its two prisons, six community correctional centers, and five Adult Probation and Patrol Districts. The department employs approximately 2900 correctional professionals, including nearly 2,000 certified officers. The department is responsible for incarceration and supervision of approximately 23,000 individuals with a mission to protect communities and improve lives.
Prior to his appointment, Redd was a vice president and manager in the Compliance Division of Goldman Sachs, overseeing the PWM U.S. Surveillance Team and involved with the Firmwide Insider Threat Team. Prior to Goldman Sachs, he served for 21 years in the Utah Department of Public Safety, working up through the ranks from Trooper to Agent, Sergeant, Lieutenant, Captain, and Chief Special Agent. During his service, Redd served as director of the State Bureau of Investigation and the Statewide Information and Analysis Center.
In addition to several investigative and intelligence initiatives during his time with the Department of Public Safety, Redd was also involved in efforts to improve the response to victims of crime, increase the communication and trust between law enforcement and communities, and address challenges involving the intersection of crime, mental illness, substance abuse, and homelessness.
In addition to his public service, Redd also served as a board member of Volunteers of America Utah, Solutions Utah, International Association of Chiefs of Police Committee on Terrorism, Utah Alcoholic Beverage Control Advisory Board, Utah Refugee Board of Advisors, Utah Crime Victims Council among others. Redd has a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Utah State University and an Executive MPA from Brigham Young University. He is a Utah native and enjoys the great people and quality of life here. He and his wife, Erin, are the proud parents of four children.
