Flag Status

The flag of the United States of America and the flag of the state of Utah are currently at full-staff.


April 11, 2024 –

Utah Gov. Spencer J. Cox has issued an order for the flags of the United States of America and the great state of Utah to be flown at half-staff on all state facilities in recognition of the passing of dedicated public servant and former Salt Lake City Mayor Ted Wilson.  Flags should be lowered to the half-staff position beginning immediately until sunset on  April 13, 2024. The governor extends an invitation to all private citizens, businesses, and other organizations to participate in this recognition.

Dec. 6, 2023 – 

Utah Gov. Spencer J. Cox has issued an order for the flags of the United States of America and the great state of Utah to be flown at half-staff on all state facilities in recognition of Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day. Flags should be lowered to the half-staff position beginning at 12 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 7, 2023, until 12 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 8, 2023. The governor extends an invitation to all private citizens, businesses, and other organizations to participate in this recognition.

OCT. 26, 2023 

Utah Gov. Spencer J. Cox has ordered the flags of the United States of America and the great state of Utah to be lowered as a mark of respect for the victims of the senseless acts of violence perpetrated on October 25, 2023, in Lewiston, Maine. Flags should be lowered to the half-staff position on Thursday, Oct. 26, 2023 until sunset on Oct. 30, 2023. To view President Biden’s statement, click here. Gov. OCT. 9, 2023 – Utah Gov. Spencer J. Cox has issued an order for the flags of the United States of America and the great state of Utah to be flown at half-staff on all state facilities in solidarity with the State of Israel and its people. The flags should be lowered to the half-staff position at sunrise on Oct. 10, 2023, and remain at half-staff through sunset on Friday, Oct. 13, 2023. The governor extends an invitation to all private citizens, businesses, and other organizations to participate in this recognition.

Sept. 29, 2023:  Per a Presidential Proclamation, Utah Gov. Spencer J. Cox has issued an order for the flags of the United States of America and the great state of Utah to be flown at half-staff on all state facilities in honor and remembrance of United States Sen. Dianne Feinstein.

The flags should be lowered to the half-staff position immediately, Sept. 29, 2023, and remain at half-staff until sunset on the day of interment. The Governor’s Office will send an additional notice indicating when flags may be returned to the full-staff position.

The governor extends an invitation to all private citizens, businesses, and other organizations to participate in this recognition.

Sept. 11, 2023: Utah Gov. Spencer J. Cox has issued an order for the flags of the United States of America and the great state of Utah to be flown at half-staff on all state facilities in recognition of Patriot Day and National Day of Service and Remembrance. The flags should be lowered to the half-staff position immediately, Sept. 11, 2023, and remain at half-staff until sunset. The governor extends an invitation to all private citizens, businesses, and other organizations to participate in this recognition.

Aug. 30, 2023: Utah Gov. Spencer J. Cox has issued an order for the flags of the United States of America and the great state of Utah to be flown at half-staff on all state facilities in recognition of Overdose Awareness Day (H.C.R. 17, 2021).The flags should be lowered to the half-staff position at sunrise on Thursday, Aug. 31, 2023, and remain at half-staff until sunset on the same day. The governor extends an invitation to all private citizens, businesses, and organizations to participate in this recognition.

May 7, 2023: Utah Gov. Spencer J. Cox has ordered the flags of the United States of America and the great state of Utah be lowered in recognition of the victims of Allen, Texas. Given that flags are currently at the half-staff position in recognition of the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service, this order serves as an extension, meaning that flags should remain lowered until sunset on Thursday, May 11, 2023. Gov. Cox. encourages individuals, businesses, and other organizations to lower their flags to half-staff as well. 

May 5, 2023: Utah Gov. Spencer J. Cox has ordered the flags of the United States of America and the great state of Utah to be lowered in honor of the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service and to pay our respects to the brave firefighters and first responders who risk their lives to protect Americans. Flags should be lowered to the half-staff position starting at sunrise on Sunday, May 7, 2023, and raised back to full-staff at sunset on the same day. Gov. Cox encourages private citizens, businesses, and other organizations to participate as well.

March 27, 2023: Utah Gov. Spencer J. Cox has ordered the flags of the United States of America and the great state of Utah be lowered in honor of the victims in Nashville, Tennessee. Jan. 23, 2023: Utah Gov. Spencer J. Cox has ordered the flags of the United States of America and the great state of Utah to be lowered to honor and remember the victims in Monterey Park, California. Dec. 6, 2022: Utah Gov. Cox has ordered the flags of the United States of America and the great state of Utah to be lowered in recognition of National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day. Oct. 7, 2022: Utah Gov. Spencer J. Cox has ordered the flags of the United States of America and the great state of Utah to be lowered in recognition of the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service. Sept. 11, 2022: Utah Gov. Spencer J. Cox has authorized the flag of the United States of America and the flag of the state of Utah to be lowered to half-staff at all state facilities on Sept. 11, 2022 in recognition of Patriot Day and National Day of Service and Remembrance. Flags are already lowered in honor and remembrance of former Queen Elizabeth II, and they will remain at half-staff until sunset on the day of interment for the queen. Gov. Cox encourages individuals, businesses, schools, and other organizations to honor and remember the victims of Sept. 11, 2001 by lowering flags.

Sept. 8, 2022: Utah Gov. Spencer J. Cox has authorized the flag of the United States of America and the flag of the state of Utah to be lowered to the half-staff position in honor of former Queen Elizabeth II. Flags should be lowered immediately until sunset on the day of her interment. Private citizens and businesses are encouraged to participate as well. President Biden’s statement can be found here.

July 8, 2022 to July 10, 2022: Utah Gov. Spencer J. Cox has authorized the flag of the United States of America and the flag of the state of Utah to be kept at the half-staff position for one additional day in remembrance of former Prime Minister of Japan Shinzo Abe. Flags should now be kept in the lowered position until sunset on Sunday, July 10, 2022. President Joe Biden’s statement regarding former Prime Minister Abe can be found here.

July 5, 2022 to July 9, 2022: Utah Gov. Spencer J. Cox has authorized the lowering of the flag of the United States of America and the flag of the state of Utah on all state facilities in accordance with President Joe Biden’s proclamation honoring the victims of the tragedy in Highland Park, Illinois. Flags should be lowered to the half-staff position immediately and return to full-staff at sunset on Saturday, July 9, 2022. The president’s statement can be found here.

May 30, 2022: Utah Gov. Spencer J. Cox has ordered the flags of the United States of America and the state of Utah to be flown at half-staff at all state facilities from sunrise to noon on Monday, May 30, 2022, in recognition of Memorial Day. Please make arrangements to lower flags from 12:01 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Monday, then raise flags back to full-staff for the remainder of the day. Businesses and citizens are encouraged to join in this tribute to our nation’s fallen battle heroes.

May 24, 2022 to May 28, 2022: Utah Gov. Spencer J. Cox has authorized the lowering of the flag of the United States of America and the flag of the state of Utah on all state facilities in accordance with President Joe Biden’s proclamation honoring the victims who lost their lives in Uvalde, Texas.

May 12 to May 16: Utah Gov. Spencer J. Cox has authorized the lowering of the flag of the United States of America and the flag of the state of Utah on all state facilities in accordance with President Joe Biden’s proclamation honoring those who have lost their lives to COVID-19.  Flags should be lowered to the half-staff position immediately and return to full-staff at sunset on Monday, May 16, 2022. The president’s statement can be found here.

May 4, 2022: America and the flag of the state of Utah on all state facilities in recognition of the life, legacy, and selfless sacrifice of former U.S. Sen. Orrin G. Hatch. Sen. Hatch will lie in state at the Utah State Capitol Building on Wednesday, May 4, 2022. On this day, flags will be lowered to the half-staff position at sunrise and returned to full-staff at sunset. 

March 23 to March 27, 2022: Utah Gov. Spencer J. Cox has ordered the lowering of the flag of the United States of America and the flag of the state of Utah on all state facilities in recognition of the life and legacy of former Secretary of State Madeleine K. Albright. Flags should be lowered to the half-staff position immediately, and return to full-staff at sunset on Sunday, March  27, 2022. Private citizens and businesses are encouraged to participate as well.

Feb. 22, 2022: Utah Gov. Spencer J. Cox has ordered the lowering of the flag of the United States of America and the flag of the state of Utah on all state facilities in recognition of the life and legacy of Col. Gail S. Halvorsen, whose courage and compassion inspired generations both across the United States and abroad. Flags should be lowered to half-staff on the day of Col. Halvorsen’s funeral, which will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2022. Private citizens and businesses are encouraged to participate as well.

Jan. 12 to Jan. 13, 2022: Utah Gov. Spencer J. Cox has ordered the lowering of the flag of the United States of America and the flag of the state of Utah on all state facilities in recognition of Sen. Harry Reid’s interment. The day of interment is scheduled for tomorrow, Jan. 13, 2022. Therefore, the flag will be lowered to half-staff beginning at midnight tonight and return to full staff at sunset on Thursday, Jan. 13, 2022. Read the President’s proclamation here. Dec. 6 to Dec. 11, 2021: Utah Gov. Spencer J. Cox has ordered that the flag of the United States of America and the flag of the state of Utah be left lowered on all state facilities in continued recognition of the life and legacy of Sen. Bob Dole. Flags should be left in the half-staff position until midnight on Saturday, Dec. 11, 2021. Private citizens and businesses are encouraged to participate as well. Oct. 18 to Oct. 22, 2021: Utah Gov. Spencer J. Cox has ordered the lowering of the flag of the United States of America and the flag of the state of Utah on all state facilities in recognition of the life and legacy of Gen. Colin Powell. Flags should be lowered to half-staff immediately until sunset on Friday, Oct. 22, 2021. Private citizens and businesses are encouraged to participate as well. Oct. 16, 2021: Utah Gov. Spencer J. Cox has ordered the lowering of the flag of the United States of America and the flag of the state of Utah on all state facilities in honor of the National Peace Officers’ Memorial Service being held in Washington, D.C., and to pay respect to law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty. Flags should be lowered to half-staff at midnight tonight through Saturday, Oct. 16, 2021. Private citizens and businesses are encouraged to participate as well.

Oct. 3, 2021: Utah Gov. Spencer J. Cox has ordered the lowering of the flag of the United States of America and the flag of the state of Utah on all state facilities in recognition of the 40th National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service, which will be held on Sunday, Oct. 3, 2021, to honor firefighters who have fallen in the line of duty. 

Sept. 24, 2021: Utah Gov. Spencer J. Cox ordered the lowering of the flag of the United States of America and the flag of the state of Utah on all state facilities to honor the life and service of Utah Marine Staff Sgt. Taylor Hoover. Hoover will be laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery on Friday, September 24, 2021. 

Sept. 11, 2021: Utah Gov. Spencer J. Cox has ordered the flags of the United States of America and the great state of Utah to be flown half-staff at all state facilities from midnight on Sept. 10, 2021 to midnight on Sept. 11, 2021 in recognition of the 20th anniversary of Patriot Day and National Day of Service and Remembrance.

Aug. 26 to Aug. 30, 2021: Utah Gov. Spencer J. Cox has ordered the flags of the United States of America and the great state of Utah to be flown at half-staff at all state facilities from sunset, August 26, 2021, until sunset on August 30, 2021, in honor of the U.S. service members and other victims killed in the terrorist attack in Kabul, Afghanistan. Individuals, businesses, and other organizations are encouraged to join in honoring our nation’s fallen heroes.

May 31, 2021: Utah Gov. Spencer J. Cox ordered the flags of the United States of America and the state of Utah to be flown at half-staff on all state facilities from sunrise until noon on Monday, May 31, 2021, in honor of Memorial Day. Flags were lowered from sunrise until noon, and then raised promptly to full-staff for the remainder of the day. Individuals, businesses and other organizations were encouraged to join in this tribute to our nation’s fallen battle heroes.

May 26 to May 30, 2021: Utah Gov. Spencer J. Cox authorized the lowering of the flag of the United States of America and the flag of the state of Utah on all state facilities in accordance with President Joe Biden’s proclamation honoring the victims of the tragedy in San Jose, CA.

April 20 to April 27, 2021: Utah Gov. Spencer J. Cox authorized the lowering of the flag of the United States of America and the flag of the state of Utah on all state facilities in accordance with President Joe Biden’s proclamation honoring the life and service of former Vice President Walter Mondale.

April 16 to April 20, 2021: Utah Gov. Spencer J. Cox authorized the lowering of the flag of the United States of America and the flag of the state of Utah on all state facilities in accordance with President Joe Biden’s proclamation honoring the victims of the acts of violence perpetrated on April 15, 2021, in Indianapolis, Indiana.

April 7, 2021 to April 8, 2021: In honor of Florida Congressman Alcee Hastings, who passed away on April 6, 2021, Utah Gov. Spencer J. Cox has authorized the lowering of the flag of the United States of America and the flag of the state of Utah on all state facilities. This order is pursuant to the requirement that flags be lowered upon the death of a sitting member of Congress, and therefore extends President Joe Biden’s previous order.

April 2, 2021 to April 6, 2021: Utah Gov. Spencer J. Cox authorized the lowering of the flag of the United States of America and the flag of the state of Utah on all state facilities in accordance with President Joe Biden’s proclamation — a sign of respect for the victims of the attack at the United States Capitol on Friday, April 2, 2021. 

March 23, 2021 to March 27, 2021: Utah Gov. Spencer J. Cox authorized the lowering of the flag of the United States of America and the flag of the state of Utah on all state facilities in accordance with President Joe Biden’s proclamation honoring the victims of the shooting in Boulder, Colorado, which occurred on Monday, March 22.

March 18, 2021 to March 22, 2021: Utah Gov. Spencer J. Cox authorized the lowering of the flag of the United States of America and the flag of the state of Utah on all state facilities in accordance with President Joe Biden’s proclamation honoring the victims of the shooting in the Atlanta Metropolitan area.

Feb. 22, 2021 to Feb. 26, 2021: Gov. Spencer J. Cox ordered the lowering of the U.S. flag and the flag of Utah in memory of the 500,000 American lives lost to COVID-19 and to highlight the magnitude of loss for so many families across the country.

Jan. 19, 2021: Gov. Spencer J. Cox ordered the lowering of the flag of the United States of America and the flag of the state of Utah on Tuesday, Jan. 19, 2021 in honor of Rep. LaWanna “Lou” Shurtliff. Rep. Shurtliff, a Democrat from Ogden who served in the Utah House from 1999 to 2008 and again from 2018 to 2020, died on Dec. 30, 2020 after a three-week battle with pneumonia. She was 85.

Jan. 11, 2021 to Jan. 13, 2021: Gov. Spencer J. Cox ordered the lowering of the flag of the United States of America and the flag of the state of Utah on in honor of the life and service of U.S. Capitol Police Officer Brian D. Sicknick. Officer Sicknick was killed while on duty during the siege of the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2021.
